About

“Beda” means “Different” in Bahasa Indonesia

Different is Beda was founded with the vision of providing much-needed support and guidance to individuals who often face unique challenges in navigating mental health due to their neurodivergency, queer identity, and/or being a person of colour.

Our founder, Bernadette, herself a neurodivergent, queer person of colour, recognised the lack of resources and understanding available to individuals like herself.

With a focus on addressing mental health, neurodivergency, and diversity, Beda strives to support both individuals and organisations in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Meet Bernadette, a seasoned mental health professional formally diagnosed with ADHD, hailing from a Filipino background but raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. Navigating life and puberty in an Islam-dominated country, and now residing in Australia, Bernadette is intimately familiar with the intricate dance of reconciling diverse facets of one's identity and the profound effects it can have.

Bernadette's unique journey has shaped her belief that beyond lived experiences, meaningful conversations and comprehensive training are pivotal for expanding one's understanding of the world. A skillful communicator, Bernadette has a remarkable talent for transforming challenging conversations and complex topics into relatable, digestible, and, most importantly, actionable insights. She firmly believes that for information to be truly meaningful, it must be accessible.

Currently serving as an Engagement and Recovery Lead in the mental health space, Bernadette dedicates her efforts to supporting her clients and conducting supervision and training for support workers. Her expertise extends not only to mental health but also to inclusive practice.
